Wilmington is a port city and the county seat of New Hanover County in coastal southeastern North Carolina, United States. With a population of 119,045 in 2017, it is the eighth most populous city in the state. Wilmington is the principal city of the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area, a metropolitan area that includes New Hanover and Pender counties in southeastern North Carolina, which has a population of 263,429 as of the 2012 Census Estimate.
Geography
Wilmington is located at 34°13′24″N 77°54′44″W. It is the eastern terminus of Interstate 40, an east-west freeway that ends 2,554 miles away at Barstow, California, where it joins I-15, the Gateway to Southern California. This road passes through many major cities and state capitals along the way. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 41.5 square miles (107 km²). 41.0 square miles (106 km²) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²) of it (1.16%) is water. Wrightsville Beach is a common destination in the Wilmington area. Carolina and Kure beaches also add to the city's beach attractions.
