According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 536 square miles (1,390 km²), of which 532 square miles (1,380 km²) is land and 4.1 square miles (11 km²) (0.8%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 71,219 people, 28,408 households, and 20,482 families residing in the county. The population density was 133 people per square mile (51/km²). There were 31,033 housing units at an average density of 58 per square mile (22/km²).
